I’m reading a great book right now. I highly recommend it to you. It’s called “The Way of the Seal” by retired Navy Seal Commander Mark Divine. Divine recounts in detail his days in Seal training, so aptly called “Hell Week.” So named because 90% of the Seal trainees will quit and go home by day 3! The training is meant to break you. The officers who reside over the task of breaking these men know a secret, however- one that I’m about to share with you.  The officers aren’t trying to break the trainees’ bodies. No, they’re out to break they’re minds. Listen, your body fails ONLY after your mind does. It’s true. I’m telling you, biologically, this is a protective system that God put into place to keep you from really hurting yourself. Your brain sends signals to your body that tells your body you’re tired, or weak, or in pain. Though perhaps in reality, you have lots more to go. It’s like that little blinking gas light in your car telling you to stop and get gas, when in reality you still have 20 more miles worth of fuel to keep your car going.

Here’s the really cool thing though…strengthen your mind and you will strengthen your body. Heck, you’ll strengthen every part of your life! An unbeatable mind is an unbeatable life! Let me prove it this way, the wisest man in history was inspired by God to say “As a man thinks, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) Your mind leads your actions. It leads your resolve in any given situation that you’re either going to give up or you’re going to push through.

So, how do you strengthen your mind? Word puzzles? Memory games? No, were not talking about cognition here. We’re talking about sheer brute strength. Mental resilience. The type of mind that gets handed a load of pressure and stress and smiles back. A mind that is able to punch back and not lose footing. Rudyard Kipling once wrote, “If you can keep your head when all about you  are losing theirs…then yours is the earth and everything that’s in it. And which is more, you’ll be a man, my son.”

Start by getting rid of mental stress. I don’t mean life stress. That’s impossible. We have to clear out the junk that’s clogging healthy thought. You need quite time. you need a quite place. You need quiet thoughts. Try this… take 5 minutes to sit with your back straight. Now breath. Fill your lungs from the bottom to the top with deep diaphragmatic breathing. Try box breathing. Take 4 seconds to breath in. Hold for 4 second. Breath out for 4 seconds. Repeat for 5 minutes focussing only on your breathing.

Now, start to focus on things you are thankful for. Let gratitude be the open door to cleaning out the junk. One by one, approach each item in your mind. Look it over. Meditate upon its value and importance. Now, give thanks.

Finally, begin to forge new realities. Like the Matrix, it’s real if you believe it’s real. Or, “as you think in your heart, so you are.” Start to define a new you. Start to define where you want to be. Who you want to be.

Now, open your eyes. That’s you’re new reality. Go live it out.

These types of brain exercises should be done daily. Mental atrophy is just as real as muscular atrophy. We spend a great deal of time on physical strength and our bodies show it. Bigger biceps, faster reps, longer runs, etc. But, when we don’t spend time developing mental strength, that too shows. Stress, depression, anxiety, defeated attitudes, disorientation. It’s time you live an unbeatable life by developing an unbeatable mind.
