Have you ever wondered why you struggle with feeling anxious, or suffer mood swings into sadness? How about struggling with worry and depression. Maybe you thought it was based on life circumstances. Maybe its spiritual. Maybe it's not. My mother's side has always suffered from worry and anxiety. Could that be genetic? Isn't worry a sign of distrust in God? I've asked these questions for years. And so I recently went under the bio-hackers microscope once again and had a HPA-G Complete profile done to look at my brain's ability to produce the neurochemicals responsible for mood and peace. What I found was low levels of serotonin (a hormone responsible for pleasure and elevated mood) and GABA (a neurotransmitter responsible for calmness and relaxation). I also found that while I have good levels of total testosterone, my body is struggling to clear estrogen, allowing my body to reap the consequences of high estrogenic metabolites. This could easily add fuel to the fire of emotional distress. The point is, we can't just say we are having a bad day. We can't just say it's the Devil's fault. We can't just say we are genetically predisposed. We can't just say it's a chemical or hormonal issue. It could be all of that! At least knowing the biological puzzle helps me to find the pieces. Now on to build a better brain by science and mitigate the neurochemical issues.

I can't express my excitement. Two things that I love, Jesus and fitness are coming together greater than I've ever imagined. I've recently been asked to come to the far east where Christianity and the church is persicuted under communist, athiest regime. Here, churches are using crossfit as a means to plant new churches. I'll be teaching in the college on fitness, nutrition, and health, and then training the leaders in crossfit and fitness, technique, mobility, etc. My passport came in today and everything is 100% paid for. I leave in April. Using barbells and kettlebells to spread the greatest love the world has ever seen. Hard to imagine. Sometimes experiments don't go the way you planned. By one n=1 I ended up tanking my testosterone down to 236 total. Not good. Sunday morning coming down? How about going up instead? Sundays serve me a full day of having to be alert and cognitively present. I have 2 separate sermons to deliver and often a class or 2 to teach as well. Let alone, the social responsibility of being present with a viarety of people. Sundays are my game day. So how do I prepare? Morning routines are important. I stick very closely to the same morning routine but I switch it up on Sundays. I do it for my brain. And my morning routine actually starts on Saturday night. I want my brain, specifically my neurotransmitters (those vital little chemical messengers between nerve endings in my brain) firing on all cylinders. So what does it look like? Nine hours of restful sleep in order to pay back any sleep debt I make have banked throughout the week. I go to bed extra early the night before. Upon awakening, I spend 15-20 minutes in meditation and prayer. I take either a half or one whole Modafinil. Then I have 2 cups of Lion's Mane coffee with some cayenne, and Alpha GPC. 30 minutes in the infrared sauna sweating out some toxins. And then maybe 700mg GABA. Finally, I keep as much artificial light knocked down and sit by my bay window to watch the sun come up and flood my light receptors with some natural Vitamon D rich goodness and flip my circadian rhythm over to daytime. My internal roster crow.
